Boxing Style

There are three generally accepted boxing styles that are used to define fighters. They are the in-fighter, the out-fighter and the brawler.

1. Inside Fighter

In-fighters are often considered the most exciting boxers to watch. This style favours closing inside an opponent, overwhelming them with intensity and flurries of hooks and uppercuts. They tend to be agile on their feet which can make them difficult to evade for a slower fighter. They also tend to have a good "chin" because this usually involves being hit with many jabs before they can maneuver inside where they are more effective.

2. Outside fighter

Out-fighters (also known as an "out-boxer" or "boxer") are the opposite of the in-fighter. Where the in-fighter tries to close the gap between himself and his opponent, the out-fighter seeks to maintain that gap and fight with faster, longer range punches. Since they rely on the weaker jabs and straights (as opposed to hooks and uppercuts), they tend to win by points decisions rather than by knockout, although some out-fighters (such as Lennox Lewis and Felix Trinidad) have notable knockout records. They attempt to control the fight by using their jab to keep their opponent at range, and using their strong footwork to evade any opponent that closes in. In fact, outside fighters are known for being extremely quick on their feet, which often makes up for their relative lack of power. Out-fighters are often regarded as the best boxers on account of their desire to win a fight by wearing an opponent down and outclassing an opponent by strategy, rather than simply knocking him out.

3. Brawler

If the out-fighter represents everything classy about boxing, the brawler (also known as the 'slugger', 'hard hitter' or 'one puncher') often stands for everything that's brutal and dirty in the sport. Sluggers tend to lack finesse in the ring, but make up for it in raw power, often able to knock almost any opponent out with a single punch. This ability makes them exciting to watch, and their fights unpredictable. Many brawlers tend to lack mobility in the ring and have difficulty pursuing fighters who are fast on their feet. They prefer the harder, slower punches (such as hooks and uppercuts) and tend to ignore combination punching. Their slowness and predictable punching patterns (single punches with obvious leads) often leaves them open for counterpunching.

Hatton-Pacquiao

The much-anticipated fight, pitting junior welterweight champ Hatton and pound-for-pound king Pacquiao, is signed, sealed and delivered, promoters Top Rank and Golden Boy announced Wednesday.

They'll fight May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The fight will be on pay-per-view, but the promoters have not decided whether they will accept an offer from HBO or rival Showtime to produce and distribute the pay-per-view telecast. If they accept the Showtime offer, sister network CBS will have some involvement in the marketing and promotion of the bout, according to Top Rank's Bob Arum.

Top Rank and Golden Boy thought they had a deal for the fight weeks ago until Pacquiao insisted on a better percentage of the revenue. After back and forth, Pacquiao missed a deadline to sign and the fight was called off. That resulted in a frenetic few days spent trying to revive the deal.

In the end, they worked it out last week with Pacquiao due to receive 52 percent to Hatton's 48 percent, according to Arum.

The Famed Promotor

Bob Arum was born December 8, 1931 in New York City. He is a professional boxing promoter. He also worked for the US Attorneys Office for the southern district of New York, in the Tax division.

Arum attended Erasmus Hall High School, New York University and Harvard Law School. He worked as an attorney in the United States Department of Justice and had little interest in boxing until 1965.[1] He used his education and business savvy to become a boxing promoter, and during the 1980s became a driving force behind the sport, rivaling Don King. Arum put together superfights like Marvin Hagler vs. Roberto DurĂ¡n and Hagler vs. Thomas Hearns.

A particularly touching moment happened when Arum mounted the Hagler-John Mugabi, Hearns-James Shuler double header in Las Vegas on April, 1986. After the Hearns-Shuler fight, Shuler, who had lost by knockout in the first round, showed up at Arum's hotel room to thank him for the opportunity to fight Hearns. Ten days later, Shuler was dead in an unfortunate motorcycle accident.

Arum kept producing big-scale undercards and superfights, including the Hagler-Sugar Ray Leonard bout, the Leonard-Hearns rematch, Evander Holyfield vs. George Foreman and many others.

Some of Arum's superstars from the 1990s include former world Flyweight champion Michael Carbajal and current boxing superstars includes five-time world champion Oscar de la Hoya, three-time division champion Erik Morales and reigning and defending WBC Lightweight World champion Manny Pacquiao.

Arum has concentrated largely on promoting Hispanic fighters in recent years, citing surveys which show boxing is among the most popular sports within the Hispanic community. He has had great success with fighters such as Miguel Cotto, who has won world titles at 140 and 147 pounds, and Antonio Margarito, who held a 147-pound WBO belt from 2002-2007.

He has concentrated many of his shows in the Southwestern portion of the U.S., in cities with large Spanish-speaking populations. He's also the promoter of many of the cards on Telefutura, a Spanish language network.

Arum is a member of the International Boxing Hall Of Fame.

Antonio Margarito has risen to be number one in his native Mexico, following in the footsteps of such highly acclaimed fighters as Julio Cesar Chavez, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera.

The man known as “the Tijuana Tornado” earned that unofficial honor six months ago, when he stopped previously unbeaten Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto in the 11th round to claim the WBA welterweight title.

“To be number one in Mexico is a great honor,” Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said Thursday. “He worked hard for it, he fought everybody to get there. He’s so beloved in Mexico because of the way he gutted out.
“He’s taken the mantle that Chavez had. Chavez had it, then Morales and Barrera. Now, it’s Margarito’s.”

Margarito knows that to remain No. 1 he has to keep winning. He’ll get his first opportunity on Saturday night when he defends his 147-pound title against well-traveled Shane Mosley at Staples Center. Promoters Arum and Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Productions, forecast a sellout crowd of more than 18,000.

Duel Pacquiao Versus Hatton

MANILA, Philippines—The former promoter of Ricky Hatton has downplayed the British Hitman’s chances against Manny Pacquiao, saying the Filipino sensation will be stronger and quicker than when he pummeled Oscar De La Hoya last month.

“I have to admit I don’t like Hatton’s chances,” Frank Warren, widely considered as the top promoter in Britain, said in an article posted on boxingscene.com.

Hatton was under Warren’s wing for several years, before the two had a falling-out in 2005.

Warren believes the light-welterweight fight will work for Pacquiao more than Hatton, the reigning IBO champion in the 140-lb division.

“Boxing at light-welterweight will suit him (Hatton) but it will favor Pacquiao more because he’ll be that bit quicker than he was against Oscar De La Hoya at welterweight and even stronger,” Warren said.

Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, had predicted a “late knockout victory” for the Gen. Santos City southpaw in the mega-buck showdown scheduled May 2 in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao has also been installed by Las Vegas pundits as a 2-1 favorite to beat Hatton, who is coming off an 11th-round demolition of American Paul Maglinaggi last November.

Hatton’s trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr., had earlier belittled Pacquiao’s chances against Hatton.

Mexican Erik Morales, who lost twice by knockout to Pacquiao in their fight trilogy, has also picked Hatton to prevail.

Pacquiao and Hatton will split the expected $58.2 million fight purse with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum pointing out that Hatton’s fan following in Britain will contribute handsomely to revenues from the showdown.

“We might do a million homes on pay-per-view in England,” Arum said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times recently.

“You have to give Hatton some credit for what he brings to the table.”

Chris John will make it to the United States

The desire to see a lot of people pride boxer Indonesia, Chris John, fight in the United States will be realized. What can you can, 'the Dragon'?

Chris John fight will be in the United States, precisely in the city of Houston, to face Rocky Juarez on 28 February 2009. The seizure of the world champion title WBA featherweight will be held at the same time struggling with the title of the world-class lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez of contra Juan Diaz.

But the opportunity finally came, too. Although not fight in the big city like as Las Vegas or New York, the only fight against Juarez later is valuable opportunities for the former wushu athlete.

Will Danny Green Come Back?

The first fight saw Mundine win comfortably on the scorecards with a unanimous decision and scores of 116-113 and 118-112 (twice). The former two time WBA 168 pound champion seemed to use his superior speed and boxed well and Green was unable to gain any consistent advantage and land his noted power shots. It is now over two years since the bout and whilst Mundine regained the WBA super-middleweight title in March 2007 and defended it four times he has struggled to win global adulation. In the other corner, Danny Green moved up to 175 pounds and won the WBA title in December 2007, defeating Stipe Drews at the Challenge Stadium in Perth, Western Australia. In a surprising move however he decided to retire on March 25th 2008, just weeks before his planned first defense of his new WBA title. He was due to fight Argentina’s Hugo Garay and emotionally told a press conference on this date that he wished to retire at the top of his game as world champion.

As we move into a new boxing year Australian boxing fans have one fight they wish to see happen in 2009. This fight is the re-match of former WBA light-heavyweight and WBC interim super-middleweight champion Danny Green (25-3, 22 KOs) and his arch rival Anthony Mundine (34-3, 23 KOs). Their first fight in May 2006 in Sydney broke all Australian box office records as they generated in excess of $10m revenue and a live crowd of over 37,000 at the Aussie Stadium in Sydney, New South Wales. Unofficial figures suggest a PPV audience in excess of 800,000 for the bout and given the country has a national population of just 22 million, it clearly showed how the fight sparked the public’s imagination. Many feel this type of viewing audience, both live and PPV can be repeated if the fighter’s enter the ring for a second time later in 2009.

Team Mundine tried to entice “The Green Machine” back in the ring with a $5m re-match offer and 92 days after his stated retirement announcement Danny Green re-affirmed his decision to stay outside the ring. He called the offer by Mundine’s manager, Khoder Nasser as “crazy” and he was currently happily retired. The talk in Australia however has not gone away. Indeed, Khoder Nasser responded by saying after Green’s press conference on the 24th June, “He hasn’t said no. He had made a lifetime decision to walk away from the sport but now he is saying that the decision isn’t final.”

In November 2008 Green was a contestant on the Australian version of Dancing With The Stars and came runner up with his dance partner Natalie Lowe. The final drew a viewing audience in Australia of over 2 million viewers and he hinted that a 2009 return may be on the cards. Fightnews caught up with the former WBA light-heavyweight champion in Perth, Western Australia to give us an update on the fight all of Australia wants to see.

Danny, the boxing fans of Australia are wondering whether you will return to the ring in 2009, can you give us an update?

This is a big challenge for me as I normally keep my word when I decide to do something and when I made my decision to retire that was it. I wanted to retire at the top of my sport and as WBA light heavyweight champion that is what I did. I had all my faculties in tact, been a two weight world champion and made a good living in the sport. I have a lovely family with wife Nina and two young children, Chloe who is five and Archie who is one. They mean the world to me and I have had an opportunity to spend some quality time with them which many men don’t get that chance. However, the challenge for me is that in my heart I love the sport of boxing and my only losses were to Marcus Beyer in Germany, controversially and my loss to Mundine. I know against Mundine I fought the wrong fight and revenge and redemption is in my mind.

So you will return to the ring in 2009?

I haven’t totally made up my mind and I have to balance the view that in ten years I don’t want to be saying - what if , what if, what if I had a re-match with Mundine and a chance to redeem myself in the eyes of the Australian boxing fans. The first fight was so huge and broke all Australian PPV figures for any event - show, pop concert, and sporting event. Given our country is so small, I am proud that I was part of such an event. I do have to balance this however with whether my body can take the torture of the training and punishment of the preparation that our fight game provides. I have kept myself in shape since I retired and the experience back in the spotlight with Dancing With The Stars was great and it sharpened me up. My flexibility is good and to get to the final was great. Everyone was telling me when I would come back and shut up Mr Mundine. He has the bragging rights currently but the motivation for redemption and revenge is a motivating factor.

When will you make your final decision to return?

I have discussed this with my wife and family and I hope to make the decision soon. People keep asking me and pushing me for a decision because the fight is so huge in Australia but I will make my mind up when I am ready - but it will be sooner rather than later. I will weigh up all the options and see what is best for the health and welfare of Danny Green.

If you do return to the ring, will it be just to fight Anthony Mundine?

We could try to bring some of the Americans over to Australia such as Roy Jones, Kelly Pavlik or Bernard Hopkins and that would sell out any arena in the country and generate a huge gate and PPV income. However, if I do return to the ring it will only be to avenge my loss in 2006. My only motivation to return and put my body through the pain I know it will have to go through is to do something that motivates me. Redemption, Revenge - these are the only two words I am interested in. I know on the world scale that many will not be bothered about Danny Green fighting Anthony Mundine but in Australia it is big news and a big fight. If I return it would only be to take on Mundine, preferably in my hometown of Perth, as I went to his backyard for the first fight. That is if I decide to return.

Will $5m be a temptation to you to return as Team Mundine has offered?

I know their offer of this money was real and I have to balance this in the current economic climate but it is not the money I would return for, if I made that decision. It would be purely to avenge only the second fighter who has beaten me. The losses against Marcus Beyer for the WBC super-middleweight title were controversial and I can accept that I gave my best but the refereeing and scoring were disappointing to say the least. Against Mundine I fought the wrong fight. He got to use his speed and boxing ability and I could not land my left jab or left hook. My preparation wasn’t ideal and both physically and mentally I know I can improve from the first fight.

How would you see a return fight?

It would be great to knock Mundine out in front of 40,000 fans in Perth. That would be my result. I know given the right preparation and tactics that would be possible.

Will you be ringside for Mundine’s fight with Shannon Taylor in Sydney on February 11th?

No - I will be watching the fight from television but I think Shannon may be a handful for Mundine if he is not at his best. I have sparred many rounds with Taylor and he is a tough cookie, wears his heart on his sleeve. It will be interesting to watch but I think Mundine will have the upper hand with speed and win. It will be a tougher fight than most expect though.

Overall, Green remains tight-lipped about his real intentions although many believe that the lure of a $5m re-match will be too much to give up after a refreshing time with his family in 2008. It is obvious that revenge against Mundine is his only objective and many believe that fight will, eventually be made in Perth at the Challenge Stadium in 2009 in front of a 40,000 live gate. It will be interesting to see the post fight comments from Team Mundine after his fight against Shannon Taylor on February 12th. If that challenge and $5m offer is re-iterated once more, it just may be the deciding factor for undoubtedly Australia’s biggest potential fight of 2009.

Pacquio's skill compare with Ali

There is no doubt that Manny Pacquiao is today the best boxer in the world. His victories speak for themselves. No need to rave about them. But there is still room for improvement, though not necessarily in his already near-perfect boxing skills.

Here’s my unsolicited advice to “Pacman”: If you want to be “The Greatest,” do what “The Greatest” did.

• In Muhammad Ali’s time, the United States was committing horrible atrocities against the Vietnamese people.

In Pacquiao’s time, the illegitimate administration of Gloria Macapagal-arroyo is committing equally horrible atrocities against the Filipino people.

• In Ali’s time, the United States, through its Armed Forces, tried to use him for propaganda in the Vietnam War.

In Pacquiao’s time, this illegitimate administration, directly through its “president,” is using him as a prop to help lift Arroyo’s sagging popularity and, most likely, will use him to gain public support for its Charter change campaign.

• Ali, during his time, rejected being drafted into the US armed forces and protested the Vietnam War, which killed scores of innocent people.

Pacquiao, in his time, seems to be clueless about what is happening around our country: the numerous corruption scandals hounding this administration; the genocide (the word “murder” doesn’t quite capture it) of several journalists and of countless more political activists; and the shameless drive of changing our Constitution to keep public thugs in power.

• Ali didn’t become “The Greatest” because he won boxing titles and “[floated] like a butterfly, [stung] like a bee.” He became one because he stood for what he believed in and even paid the price for it. (He was stripped of his title.)

Pacquiao can become better than “The Greatest” not because of his boxing prowess or a stint in politics. He can “beat” Ali by standing up against the traditional politicos, or “trapos,” who swarm like flies around him, and by opposing Charter change and other crimes against his countrymen. Only then would he truly deserve the title “People’s Champ.”

But then again, maybe this could all be a Christmas wish.

Chris John, stop resistance Hiroyuki Enoki
Fighter pride Indonesia, Chris John successfully defend the title of world champion WBA featherweight version.
